The forests of the Central Depression of Rio Grande do Sul, are in an advanced process of fragmentation due to the expansion of the agricultural area. These fragments are in different conservation status, as a consequence of the selective extraction of noble woods and the action of livestock inside them. The lack of studies on the floristic composition, structure, reproductive strategies of tree species and the effects of fragmentation on the ecosystem, invests any practice that ensures the conservation of forest genetic resources in situThis work is the result of a study carried out on a little altered fragment in the municipality of Formigueiro. Floristic data are presented inserted in the dynamic context of the vegetation in the south of Brazil, under the influence of the climatic variations of the Quaternary, identifying the floras of origin and the recent character of these forests. The structural analysis highlights the occurrence of rosemary ( Holocalyx balansaeMich.), A species that despite being very rare in Central Depression, showed anlta density of individuals in the study area. From the data obtained in the field, it is concluded that rosemary is characterized as a climactic species, vulnerable to fragmentation. This information, still incipient, is of great importance in the conservation of the productive characteristics of the forests. The lack of these, will make the permanence of these fragments in rural properties impossible
