plasmada.

This work aims to study the construction of the fantastic in the novel O Homem
Duplicado, by José Saramago, in order to apprehend the imago hominis shaped there. It is based
on the concept of the "fantastic" – located between the "strange" and the "marvelous" – as
studied by Tzvetan Todorov in his book Introduction to Fantastic Literature (1975). The level
of expression of the narrative will be examined with emphasis on the following procedures:
enumeration, gradation, introductory phrases and hypothetical constructions. Based on them, it
will be investigated the mode of operation of metamorphosis occurring in the narrative leading
to the study of the “theme of me", on the issue of double, and the "theme of you", linked to
death and rebirth present in the text. The analysis of structural and thematic elements mentioned
above reveal the Saramaguian conception of man and of the world, proper of the second phase
of his fictional output.
