This essay deals with the influence of Max Weber in the formulation of a central
concept in the theoretical framework of Pierre Bourdieu: the concept of field.
Central tool in the writings of the French sociologist, we show that this concept
is a tributary of reading that made Bourdieu of Weber’s writings on the sociology
of religion. To accomplish the exposure of this process of sociological heritage,
we start from the moment that Bourdieu held for the first time the concept in
its first systematic form. From the moment that the term first appears until the
moment it is first systematized, there is a period of maturation, in which the
appropriation and interpretation of Weber’s work was at least essential. We then
try to unravel how was the appropriation and interpretation of Weber’s work
made by Bourdieu to the formulation of the concept of field.
