A bacia hidrográfica do Rio São Francisco possui área de drenagem de 639.219 km², extensão de 2.700 km, vazão média de 2.850 m³/s. Devido a sua vasta extensão a bacia é dividida em quatro regiões fisiográficas: Alto, Médio, Sub-médio e Baixo São Francisco. Este trabalho deu ênfase na sub-região do Alto São Francisco, que possui uma área de 100.076 km² e percorre da nascente do rio até a cidade de Pirapora (MG). O trabalho consistiu em determinar as características hidrológicas da bacia para a quantificação das demandas e análise da disponibilidade hídrica para o abastecimento humano. Para a análise da distribuição temporal da vazão foi realizada, através de softwares, buscas pelas séries históricas de cada estação fluviométrica. Foram analisadas 8 estações dentre as 63 encontradas. Para cada estação foi obtida uma hidrógrafa completa para a análise dos anos de maior ou menor vazão. A determinação da demanda desconsiderou a área de influência da estação e considerou apenas a população do município em que a estação fluviométrica se encontra. Observou-se que o balanço da disponibilidade hídrica versus demanda, para pequenas áreas de contribuição encontra-se em situações favoráveis, e para a área total, o balanço está em estado de atenção a crítico.

The hydrographic basin of São Francisco River has drainage area of 639.219 km², length 2.700 km, average discharge is 2.850m³/s. Due to its vast length, the basin is divided into four physiographic regions: High, Middle, SubMiddle and Low São Francisco. This paper investigated the subregion of High São Francisco, which has an area of 100.076 km² and flows from its source up to the city of Pirapora (MG). The paper aimed to determine the hydrological characteristics of the basin for the quantification of the demand and analysis of the hydric availability for the human supply. For the analysis of the time distribution of the flow, searches were made for the historical series of each fluvial gaging station. Eight stations out of 63 were analysed. For each station a complete hydrograph was obtained for the analysis of the years of greater or lesser flow. The determination of the demand disregarded the influence area of the station and considered only the city population in which the fluvial gaging station is located. It was observed that the balance of water availability versus the demand for small areas of contribution is in favourable situations, and for the total area, the balance is in a status of attention to the critical.
