O presente artigo visa expor os resultados de investigações livres – que se utilizaram principalmente de fontes da imprensa periódica – acerca das formas de atuação organizadas e coletivas dos “artistas” – como se designavam à época os trabalhadores manuais qualificados – da cidade de Manaus entre as décadas de 1870 e 1880. Tais atuações incluíam a organização de sociedades mutualistas e escolas a elas associadas. Por fim, destaca-se nesse processo a publicação de um periódico operário, O Artista (1886-1888); além de uma tentativa precoce de articulação política na eleição provincial de 1876.
This article aims to expose the results of free investigations - which mainly used sources from the periodical press - about the organized and collective forms of action of the “artists” - as the skilled manual workers were called at the time - in the city of Manaus between the decades 1870 and 1880. Such activities included the organization of mutual societies and associated schools.
