Este artigo pretende analisar as representações sociais da passagem da Monarquia a Republica no Brasil, numa visão historiográfica, objetivando compreender a crise e o declínio da Monarquia, buscando trabalhar as obras de Machado de Assis enquanto fontes históricas, procurando compreender as formas diferenciadas de representações do tempo e dos acontecimentos produzidas pela literatura. A proposta não é fazer uma apropriação arbitrária da literatura pela história ou vice-versa, mas sim trabalhar em uma perspectiva histórica analisando o acontecimento de 1889 numa perspectiva ampliada, buscando atingir as representações sociais do período e procurando realçar a importância da literatura para a história

Resumo Inglês:

This article pretends to analyse the social representations of the Monarchy moving times to Brazilian Republic, using a historiography vision. The text aims to understand the crises and decline of the Monarchy in Brazil. It uses the works of the novelist Machado de Assis as a historic material, trying to understand some historic representations of this time and events reveled by Literature. It doesn’t aim to take the informations in arbitary way of the history and literature, but it has been written in a historic perspective, studying the 1889 events in wide perspective, searching the period social representation reach, and it tries to show the importance of Literature to History.
