Atualmente, a infecção genital pelo papilomavirushumano (HPV) é a doença sexualmente transmissível(DST) mais frequente no mundo. Assim, objetivou-seidentificar conhecimentos, concepções de risco epráticas preventivas em relação às DST, em geral eao HPV em particular, entre mulheres atendidas naatenção básica de saúde da cidade de Itaúna/MG.Foram utilizadas abordagens qualitativa e quantitativa,a partir de aplicação de questionários e entrevistas,respectivamente. Os resultados demonstraram que acarência de informações adequadas acerca do HPVfavorece o desenvolvimento de concepções fundadasem crenças, mitos, tabus e preconceitos. Essesresultados foram alcançados apesar das barreiras comas quais os pesquisadores se depararam desde o inícioda pesquisa. Cada barreira sugeria a existência dessasconcepções que cercam o sexo e a sexualidade. Dessaexperiência, surge a certeza da necessidade de umtrabalho mais efetivo, junto às comunidades, deorientação e conscientização sobre o HPV, emparticular, e as DST.

Objective: Currently, the genital infection by the humanpapillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexuallytransmissible disease (STD) in the world. Our objectivewas to identify the knowledge, risk conceptions andpreventive practices against STD and HPV amongwomen in the public health care at Itaúna/MG.Methods: Our investigation was composed byquantitative and qualitative analysis, by the means ofquestionnaires and interviews. Results: The results ofthe study show a relation between the low level ofcorrect information about HPV and the developmentof misconceptions based on rely, myths and taboos.Despite all difficulties since the beginning of theresearch, we have achieved our objectives. Theseproblems suggested the existence of misconceptionsabout sex and sexuality. Conclusion: Our experiencesuggests the need of more effective work withcommunities in order to improve the guidance andawareness about the STDs and, particularly, the HPV.
