Este trabalho busca argumentar que (i) assim como a produção linguística, as avaliações e as per-cepções são demonstravelmente variáveis e ordenadas; e que (ii) os estudos sobre avaliações e percepções são fundamentais não só para a compreensão dos processos de variação e mudança linguística (WEINREICH; LABOV; HERZOG, 2006 [1968]), mas também para a promoção do respeito linguístico (SCHERRE, 2020). Para tanto, resenham-se inicialmente alguns estudos que tratam de avaliações e de percepções, e que demonstram a sistematicidade de seus padrões de variação; em seguida, apresenta-se sinteticamente um método para modelagem de campos inde-xicais (ECKERT, 2008), conceito que permite operacionalizar os múltiplos significados sociais de variantes linguísticas. Argumenta-se, em última instância, que os próprios linguistas ainda pouco conhecem os mecanismos de associação entre certas variantes e significados sociais, e que a am-pliação de estudos sistemáticos sobre avaliações e percepções sociolinguísticas é peça-chave para o combate ao preconceito linguístico e para a promoção da diversidade linguística.

This article argues that (i) just as in language production, linguistic evaluation and perceptions exhibit orderly heterogeneity; and (ii) studies on evaluation and perceptions are central not only for understanding the processes of language variation and change (WEINREICH; LABOV; HERZOG, 2006 [1968]), but also for promoting linguistic respect (SCHERRE, 2020). To these ends, we initially review a few studies on evaluation and perceptions that show the systematicity of their variation patterns; next, we present a method for modeling indexical fields (ECKERT, 2008), a concept that allows for the operationalization of multiple social meanings of linguistic variants. Finally, we argue that linguists themselves still know little about the mechanisms of association between certain linguistic variants and social meanings, and that it is necessary to develop more systematic studies on evaluations and perceptions in order to diminish language prejudice and to promote language diversity.
