DAVID HUME SOBRE IMAGINAÇÃO E IMPOSSIBILIDADE: UMA ANÁLISE DE EXEMPLOS LITERÁRIOS

O presente artigo se propõe a verificar, através da literatura, a pertinência da opinião do filósofo escocês David Hume acerca da relação entre impossibilidade e imaginação; segundo Hume, o absolutamente inconcebível também é absolutamente impossível. Algumas construções poéticas compostas pela conjunção de idéias contrárias ou opostas foram analisadas, com o objetivo de verificar até que ponto é possível formar delas representação mental visual e/ou lingüística. A fim de empreender a análise, uma tipologia das estratégias literárias de conjunção entre idéias contrárias ou opostas foi esboçada.

The present article undertakes (with the help of literary examples) an examination of Scottish philosopher David Hume’s opinion concerning the relation between impossibility and imagination; according to Hume, that which is absolutely inconceivable must be also absolutely impossible. Some poetic constructions conjoining contradictory or opposing ideas were analyzed, with the intent to verify to what extent they would yield visual and/or linguistic mental representations. A typology of the literary strategies for conjoining contradictory or opposing ideas was sketched as support for our analysis.
